Stone Settings- Behind the Seams

Join Michael Boyd for two sessions of a live virtual workshop where you will learn basic to advance methods of setting cabochons! Students will learn important tips for creating custom fit bezels for all manner of shapes, learn to carve stone to make a custom prong setting, and will learn tips and tricks to help you set even the most challenging stones. This will be an exploration of adding, dimension and dynamics to your work!

*Please note: As this is a new class, we may run beyond the allotted 2.5-hour session. In the off chance we do, please allow an additional 20–30 minutes. Recordings will be available for 60 days following the conclusion of the class.*

Because of the recent volatile nature of the markets - total price of kit will be calculated, and a QuickBooks invoice for kits will be sent out JUNE 29TH. Students will need to pay the invoice, before or by JULY 6TH to ensure kit arrives on time. You may purchase a seat  in the class as well as a kit after June 29th, but arrival of kit by class date is not guaranteed.

VIDEO, TRANSCRIPTS AND Q&A WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR 60 DAYS AFTER THE CLASS CONCLUDES 

Format: Live online via Zoom with slide demos, close-up tooling cams, and Q&A

Duration:  Two – 2.5hr sessions

Skill Level: Intermediate–Advanced metalsmiths who are comfortable with basic stone setting and metal fabrication.

Student provided tools and materials:

  • Basic fabricating tools (e.g. tweezers, pliers, sheers)
  • Torch setup (air acetylene, or oxy/ propane)
  • Flex shaft or alternate (e.g. Dremel or micro-motor)
  • Super glue (liquid- not gel)
  • Super glue accelerator (Rio Grande)
  • Glass dish with flat bottom (ash trays work well)
  • HARD, MEDIUM AND EASY solder
  • Toothpicks
  • Q-tips
  • Particulate dust mask
  • Safety glasses 
  • Pencil, Sharpie, notebook - for notes
  • Rags/towels
